The university provides undergraduate and graduate education, which facilitates learning within and across disciplines through integrative approaches, emphasizes experiential and service learning, and graduates students with multicultural and international perspectives. The university was opened in 2002, as the 23rd campus in the California State University System. It was built in the early part of the 20th century, as the former Camarillo State Hospital. It depicts stories of the Chumash people, Californians, politicians, early ranchers, captains of agribusiness, Camarillo State Hospital associates, field workers, and Ventura County families.Cal State Channel Islands, as it is often refered to, offers majors in 10 areas of study – art, computer science, business, English, liberal studies, environmental science and resource management, history, mathematics, and psychology.Courses are taught by qualified, well-experienced faculty, which includes 60 full-time professors and about 145 lecturers.
